Run it Twice Online at Carbon Poker
Carbon Poker is quite famous for bringing the Run it Twice feature, which many have seen on the television show High Stakes Poker, to online poker. Previously, Run it Twice was something only offered at the highest stake cash games in Las Vegas and Southern California. Of course what we’re talking about is when two players are all-in; they can agree to deal the remainder of the board two times. The winner of each run receives one half the pot.
At Carbon Poker the Run it Twice feature is available both preflop and postflop. However, the only cards which are run twice, regardless of when the players ended up all-in, are the turn and the river. A player does not have to run it twice, this is an option. If two players have the “run it twice check box” clicked when there is an all in and play is heads up, the turn and river will be run two times, with half the pot going to the winner of each run. If either player has not checked the “run it twice check box” only a single turn and river card will be dealt.
Serious online poker players might scratch their heads for a moment and consider how running it twice might change the EV of a hand (Expected Value). The answer to this quandary is simple. The expected value is the same, while variance is reduced. Running it twice does not at all change player’s EV; it simply means they’ll end up “getting unlucky” less often.
As a good player getting your money in with the best of it, it makes sense to run it twice, as your variance will be reduced while keeping the same expectation. Here are a few YouTube videos from High Stakes Poker episodes where Run it Twice came into play.
Doyle Brunson Wins $800,000 Pot
Daniel Negreanu and Jennifer Harman Run it Twice
Durrrr and Greenstein Largest Pot Ever
As you can see, Greenstein was well ahead so he declined running it twice. Durrrr snapped back and declined the offer to take any money back.
