Carbon Poker first launched under the name poker.com in 2005. Their domain name helped them get top results of single search terms “poker” in most search engines including Google, so before long they were one of the larger online poker sites operating on the net. The company soon realized it was difficult to brand their site under the poker.com domain name, and soon later launched a second site called Carbon Poker.
Carbon Poker was the first site on what would later become known as the Merge Gaming Network. For several months, the parent company ran Poker.com and Carbon Poker together. The sites shared the same player base, and while each used a different domain name, color scheme and branding, ultimately the same software was used for both sites. Carbon Poker then saw the opportunity, from the programming they developed, and started adding affiliate based self branded skins such as Iron Duke and Poker Nordica to the network. In early 2007 the company’s lease on the poker.com domain name expired. The poker.com software was rebranded and moved to pdcpoker.com and Carbon Poker became the flagship site.
