Euchre is a four player game using teams of two. To avoid collusion, Carbon Poker assigns the partners at random so you’ll never know who you’ll be matched up with. Euchre uses a 24 card deck. This deck is the same as a 52-card standard deck except cards 2-8 have been removed from it. In Euchre, the hand rankings are a bit different. The jack of trump is considered the best card, where the other same colored jack is the second best hand. From there, standard ace as high, king as second highest, etc. hand rankings are used.

In summary, the best cards in Euchre are:

#1 Right Bower (the jack of the trump suit)
#2 Left Bower (the other jack of the same colour as the trump suit)
#3 Ace
#4 King
#5 Queen
#6 Ten
#7 Nine

Euchre Game Play

Eurche is played in several rounds until a team earns 11 points. The play is as follows.

Play then starts with each player being dealt five cards and another card being dealt face up to start the bidding.

The option to bid goes around the table, and a player is given the specific option to Pass, Order up or Go Alone. When a player passes, they are deciding not to bid. If a player orders up, then they pick up that card and it become trump. If they go it alone, the same takes place, but their partner will sit out, and they’ll be playing against the other two players alone. If no one accepts the card, it goes back around the table and players have an opportunity to declare the suit.

The team accepting the bid must win 3 out of 5 tricks to win the hand. If they win all five tricks, double the points will be awarded.

During game play, the person accepting the bid leads first, placing one of their cards on the table. Play then goes clockwise around the table where each player plays a card which must follow suit. If a player is void of the led suit, he can play any card including trump. The highest ranking hand wins that trick, and the winner of the trick then leads the next card.

Euchre Scoring:

If all four players are playing, then the scores are as follows:

* If the makers win 3 or 4 tricks, they score one point.
* If the makers win all 5 tricks, they score two points.
* If the makers take fewer than three tricks, they are said to be euchred, and the defenders score two points.

If a member of the makers’ team is playing alone and wins all 5 tricks, the team scores 4 points instead of 2 – otherwise the scores are as above.

Carbon Poker Buy-in and Reserves

In order to prevent cheating, or a player being penalized when their partner has a poor internet connection, a rule has been put into place regarding reserves. When you register for the Euchre game, a buy-in, entry fee and an amount equal to both the buy-in and entry fee will be taken from your balance (2x(buy-in + fee)). This second buy-in + fee is a “reserve”.

When a player times out, they and their partner are considered to have lost, so the prize pool (ie the total of the buy-ins) is distributed between the two other players. The player who timed out has the “reserve” amount credited to their partner’s balance.

If no player times out, the reserves are credited back to players hands at the end of the match.
